Roy’s Got Wood

That’s a big ole birch tree. Beautiful tree.

Traveling with Dad is a study in trees. The kinds. The colors. The ages. One sees the forest AND the trees.

When he worked, he was a forester. His specialty was wood procurement. Translated, he bought trees. I remember him coming home when I was a little girl. In waders, carrying on about the rattlesnake he shot in a swamp that day.

In a time when it became increasingly unpopular to harvest trees, Dad couldn’t stop talking about his job. He STILL talks about it.

That beech tree there. Yeah, I could get a bunch of firewood out of that thing.

Look at that oak tree. That’d make some pretty furniture.

Roy has always been a man with a lot of wood. Long live the Tour du Roi.

  1. If a tree fell in the woods and Roy didn’t hear it, would it make a sound?

      Roy wouldn’t hear it, regardless.

  2. I like trees, Andra. I can’t name a lot of them or picture one in my mind’s eye when it’s mentioned by name, but I like them nevertheless!

  3. Love the last 2 lines, Andra. Your dad sounds like a fascinating character. Hope your weekend is going well.

  4. Andra, you know my older son is a forester too. He manages land for sale and production of timber. Get him going about trees and you’re there all day. But I love that he’s so passionate about trees. Wonder if we could Roy and Nate together? That would be fun to watch.

  6. But does he have wood at Hooters?

  7. I agree. Long live the Tour du Roi. A man passionate about his work no matter that others chain themselves to protect trees. He’s an original!

  8. It’s a good thing to still have wood at that age:)

  9. A woodsman, just like in the fairytales….

    • Yeah. This whole weekend has been like a fairy tale……..

  10. Love it! I live with a man who loves wood. He brings it home and thinks he is hiding it from me. Tom’s not one to fell a tree unless it absolutely must go because of inherent danger, but, he’s talked fellas out of logs of walnut because he is going to make something of them, or branches along the road. He’d like Roy.

    • Did Tom ever make anything out of the wood? Or did it sit?

        It sits. I sigh. Someday?

  11. OMGoodness!!! A man after my heart. Michael is also always pointing out specific trees to me…I’ve been known to hug a tree or two myself. When we went to Ireland I was mesmerized by the trees there…they told a story…they are life and the things that they’ve witnessed. Wow. I love me some trees and love the Men who talk to them (not physically love…more metaphorically…well, uh, yeah that sounded kind of nasty…haha).

    • Lori, you are funny. I’m always a little in awe of trees, too, because of how long so many of them have been around.
