Roy’s Variety Show Makes a Stop in Charleston

They got breakfast at this place tomorrow? We can go out for breakfast if you want.

It’s Cupcake, Dad. They have CUPCAKES….

They have lots of different flavors, huh? Maybe some blueberry muffins?

CUPCAKES, Dad. They are making a special CINNAMON SUGAR CUPCAKE just for my BOOK SIGNING. You know, like Emmaline has in my book?

I ain’t read your book, Andra. I done sold a lot of your books on your walk, and you didn’t even give me any money.

They have sugar-free cupcakes? I can’t eat a lot of sugar on account of my blood sugar and all. We could go out for breakfast, if you want.

And so it went on Friday, as Dad and Mom came down from Florence to re-unite me with all of the stuff left over from our adventure along the Natchez Trace, and to celebrate the Easter Weekend a bit. If you followed along with the walk, you can probably imagine what transpired…lunch where Roy’s ‘healthier choice’ was the Fried Fish Sandwich; Roy treating the powder room like an open-air roadside toilet; Roy tipping his Georgia Bulldog cap to every female in a hopping Lana Restaurant, and regaling the unlucky Georgia-alum waitress with every story he could unload on her as she tried to sling our plates onto the table; Roy grinning like a naughty schoolboy when he was presented with a surprise scoop of caramel gelato….

What shocked me is that, having spent five weeks straight with my Dad, and almost three with my Mom, getting back together was such a joy, with little of the anguish that had once been a hallmark of our relationships.

Every day with them is like adding another chocolate egg to my Easter basket.

Until Dad pees with the bathroom door open.

If you’re in the greater Charleston, South Carolina area, head on out to Cupcake Down South’s Upper King Street downtown. I’ll be there from 10am to noon today. Signing books. Selling books. Smearing books (and readers) with cinnamon sugar icing. The cupcakes look like inverted boobs. And if you’re really lucky, Dad will pose with you holding one. Or two.

It’s fun to see your Dad pop up in a post so soon after he drove back to Florence–he’s every bit as colorful as those eggs! 🙂

My favorite is “plenty of strangers for you to talk to”.

I’m envious of her closeness to dad.

  7. Sounds like a great day getting started right about now. If I had any cupcakes in the house, I’d have one in your honor, but an egg sandwich will have to do. I’m toasting you with coffee.

  12. Nice to see Gentleman Roy perusing the daily paper, whilst his daughter shamelessly mugs for the camera… again. Wish I could have been there.

  13. It would be a delight to watch Roy hold court. Glad you’re having fun. It’s interesting what kinds of things it takes to shift to the adult acceptance dynamic with parents rather than falling back on the old patterns. Glad you’re still enjoying it.

Maybe your Dad is claustrophobic and the rooms are too small? I know I do have that problem every now and then (at home my doors stay open and I’m sure I’ve told you before but I do not have a door on my bedroom for that specific reason), but I’ve never let the door open in a restaurant…or any public place (although I’ve wanted too). Parents are an adventure.
