Happy Birthday, Meriwether Lewis!

meriwether lewis

August 18 is Meriwether Lewis‘ birthday!!!

It’s the first year I’ve celebrated.

No. Really.

MTM put together really cool postcards with Lewis’ face on them. We planned to send them out to almost five hundred people.

Including most of you.

A more personal way to remember someone who lived life like a sparkler.

Only, I’ve been buried in a rewrite, and MTM has been obliterated by work. Between the two of us, we couldn’t get the postcards to print. They kept hanging up in the collator.

So, in spite of not having very cool Meriwether Lewis postcards in your mailboxes today, I hope you will stop for a few seconds. Maybe a minute or two. And remember his life.

I’m sure Merry would like that.

  2. Life often gets in the way of our best intentions, doesn’t it, but, without your blog, and especially your book, so many would not know much about Meriwether Lewis at all, so, you see, you have paid his birthday celebration forward many times over already. 🙂 (those postcards sound pretty nifty, though).

    Hope you are feeling well.

  4. I have a fairly ancient copy of the journals. I got ’em out and read for a while. On August 18, 1804, Clark mentions a dance in honor of Lewis’ birthday. “A fine evening,” he says.

  6. As Facebook is wont to do these days, little sidebar articles and advertisements attach themselves to related posts . . . Look what I found there this morning – wish I had a few extra mil just lying around! 🙂 http://www.latimes.com/business/realestate/hot-property/la-fi-hotprop-lewis-clark-ranch-20140725-story.htmlHappy

Of course, this is a realtor’s promotional ad, but to consider the video from our historical vantage point . . . priceless!! Happy Birthday, Merry!

  16. The postcards sound lovely but life often gets away from us. I think your intentions are obvious and you are spreading his “sparklers”. Thanks!

  20. I have a postcard I bought at a museum intending to send it to you two weeks ago. LOL! I get it! Keep writing, and the esteemed (in my eyes) Meriwether Lewis will still be remembered more this year than most. Look at all of us thinking about him! I didn’t do that last year. 🙂

  21. Okay, okay, okay… I’m late for the party! Sorry, but I don’t think he’ll know.
